ISWC and IPI number checker

The ISWC is the ID of a song, and the IPI is the ID of a writer or publisher. Paste either to check it is correctly formed, and read how to find the real one if you do not have it yet.

Two numbers that every form asks for, and nobody explains

Split sheets, distributor forms and society registrations all ask for an ISWC and an IPI as if everyone knew them. Most new songwriters do not know what they are, which is which, or where to find them, so they guess, leave them blank or paste in the wrong number.

A wrong number is worse than a blank one. An IPI with a digit missing, or an ISWC copied with a typo, can attach a registration to the wrong person or leave it unmatched, and the payments follow the error.

Test the number, then learn where the real one lives

For an ISWC, the checker applies the same check-digit rule the system uses, so a mistyped digit is caught immediately and we tell you the digit it should be. For an IPI, it checks the length and characters, and tells you if what you pasted is a name number or the less common base number.

Next to each result is a plain explanation of where to find the real number: your society profile for the IPI, and your registered works for the ISWC, which the society assigns once a song is registered.

  • IPI length and type check, with 11-digit formatting
  • Plain-English explanation of each number

How to use the ISWC and IPI checker

  1. 1

    Choose ISWC or IPI.

  2. 2

Paste the number. Hyphens, dots and spaces are fine.

  3. 3

See whether it is well formed. For an ISWC, a failure shows the digit it should end in.

  4. 4

Copy the cleaned-up version for your form or split sheet.

  5. 5

If you do not have the number, follow the finding steps on the page.

Well formed is not the same as registered

A matching check digit proves an ISWC is correctly built, not that it exists or belongs to the song you mean. The public ISWC database, or your society, can confirm that.

IPI numbers have no public check digit we can test, so for an IPI we only check the length and characters. Only your society can confirm the number is yours. You may also see an IPI called a CAE number, which is its older name.
