YouTube has announced significant updates to its YouTube Partner Program (YPP) requirements. Beginning February 1, 2027, the entry requirements for new creators seeking advertising and subscription revenue sharing will effectively double.

While the 1,000 subscriber threshold remains unchanged, new applicants will need to generate either 8,000 qualified public watch hours over the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views over the previous 90 days.

Updated YPP Monetization Eligibility

  • Long-Form Route: 8,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months (up from 4,000).

  • Shorts Route: 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days (up from 10 million).

  • Subscriber Baseline: 1,000 subscribers (unchanged).

  • Fan Funding Tier: 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads, and either 3,000 watch hours or 3M Shorts views (unchanged).

Key Policy Changes & Industry Impact

  • Protection for Existing Partners: Channels already enrolled in YPP prior to February 1, 2027, will maintain their status and will not need to meet the updated 8,000-hour bar.

  • Shorts Performance Threshold: Every channel in YPP must maintain 10 million qualified Shorts views over a rolling 90-day period to remain eligible for direct Shorts revenue sharing. If a channel drops below this line, Shorts revenue sharing pauses until the threshold is met again, though long-form ad earnings remain unaffected.

  • Global Expansion of Premium Lite: YouTube is rolling out its lower-tier Premium Lite subscription ($8.99/mo in the U.S.) to all markets where YouTube Premium is available. Creators receive payouts from a dedicated subscription pool (allocating 60% of net revenue for Premium Lite vs. 30% for full Premium), though Premium Lite largely excludes bundled YouTube Music platform usage.

  • Alternative Revenue Paths: To assist growing channels below the updated Shorts monetization floor, YouTube is expanding incentive initiatives including YouTube Shopping bonuses, brand deals, and trend-based creator rewards.

Dark Lab Records Publishing Analysis

For music rights holders, independent artists, and record labels, these monetization shifts highlight the necessity of active catalog administration. As direct ad revenue sharing requires higher watch time floors, managing official music assets, Art Tracks, and Content ID monetization across user-generated content (UGC) becomes essential. Dark Lab Records Publishing ensures rights holders claim and collect performance and mechanical royalties across all tiers of YouTube views and subscription structures globally.
